Dawna Robertson was born to portray wildlife bursting with spirit and personalilty. She has always had a special place in her heart connecting her to wildlife, marine mammals and dogs. Dawna extends heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful foundation of her art teachers who believed in her abilities, her supportive family, friends & clients but most of all....the purest and greatest love of all...her daughter, Holley.
Dawna grew up in Toronto, Canada studying advanced Illustration & Graphic Arts at Northern Secondary School. Throughout her life she excelled at two dimensional fine arts but only returned to the three dimensional art of soapstone eight years ago after initially completing one in public school. While on childhood vacations, she was always fascinated by the monuments, totems and sculptures they visited. Dawna would always stop and be in absolute "awe" of not only the sculpture, but how the Sculptor must have felt as they made what she was so fascinated by. During her public school days, her art teacher saw talent in her after completing a carving on an Inuit and encouraged her parents to buy additional stone. The stones sat in her family home untouched, until her parents moved and asked her if she wanted to try carving soapstone again. Although she didn't have the proper equipment at the time, she loved working with the "spirit of the stone". She decided the best route for her would be to experiment with the proportion, movement and emotions of wildlife in clay for a full year before pursuing the profession of a Sculptor. Dawna considers her sculpting as a natural God given gift which required her to hone her skills. Through alot of determination, trial and error and the willingness to ask others to share their knowledge and expertise she has created a specialized field combining wildlife, animals and human emotions.
Dawna invariably uses real life stories of wildlife from her strong wildlife rehabilitation centre connections to portray wildlife in a way which is both fascinating, touching and educational. Her eye for translating that into her sculpting amazes even experienced wildlife keepers as she somehow releases not just the spirit of the stone but the animal as well which is a rare find in the sculpting arena. Dawna excels at putting that "certain sparkle" and quality of character which brings the animals to life, even if it is a memorial tribute with a heartfelt humanity instilled.
Dawna's mission is to raise the awareness of the importance of animals on our planet whether they be wildlife, marine life or pets. She wants to project their beauty, spirit and challenges of survival which distinctly parallel human emotions and spirit. Dawna achieves this by injecting her own heart which has been "life sculpted" by being a special needs mom to her daughter. Their incredible bond, oceans of emotions and need for advocacy on their life's journey makes her work filled with sentiment, raw emotions and a very special, devoted kind of love filled with pride. Numerous clients have said that Dawna's artistry would not be what it is today, if it were not for her life's journey and her sincere reverance for animals.
Dawna has garnered the recognition and appreciation for her uniquely expressed wildlife sculpture around the globe. Her clients comments in her "Testimonials" and "Guest Book" sections of this website speak for themselves as do her sculptures and artistry. She studies wildlife with great reverence, fascination and detail while educating herself in their proportions, spirits, habitats, families, emotions, movements and need for conservancy. Dawna's most interesting masterpieces are ones which have simply unfolded before her own eyes and left an emotional impact of a warm and understanding spirit in a way which could only be carved and released in stone.
Dawna welcomes every client and artistic endeavour with a burst of creative energy and warm confidence. She personifies a very down to earth person with a zest for making a difference in the lives of both wildlife and humanity with only the greatest respect and pride. She welcomes the opportunities to personally discuss her clients needs while ensuring their own personal, corporate or global mission statements are met.
